Foreign brand automobile sales in China in November

According to statistics from Gasgoo.com (Chinese), the market share of foreign brand passenger automobiles fell 1.8 percent points in November. Foreign brand passenger automobile sales in November totaled 1.06 million units, up 5.1 percent from the previous year. That growth rate is below the average monthly growth rate of 8.2 percent.

However, looking at the year as a whole, foreign brands are still performing very well overall. A total of 10.95 million automobiles have been sold since the beginning of the year, representing year-on-year growth of 13.4 percent, above the average market growth rate of 12.5 percent. 66.5 percent of all passenger automobiles sold over the first 11 months of the year were of foreign brand companies.

Japanese brands’ performance this year has been especially lackluster. A total of 9.2 percent Japanese brand vehicles were sold in November, down 9.2 percent from the previous year. Suzuki was the only major Japanese manufacturer which managed to sustain positive year-on-year growth in November, with monthly sales of the big three Japanese brands, Toyota, Nissan and Honda, decreasing around 10 percent each.

Although sales of American branded vehicles continue to increase, sales growth rates remain below the market average. A total of 220,600 American branded vehicles were sold in November, representing year-on-year growth of just 2.7 percent. Meanwhile, sales growth of German and Japanese vehicles remain in the low double digits. Monthly sales totals for German and Japanese branded vehicles totaled 301,900 and 161,600 vehicles, respectively.

 

VW (including Audi sales) remains the best performing automobile brand in November, followed by Hyundai (including Kia sales), GM, Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Ford, PSA, Daimler and Suzuki.

A total of 265,800 VWs and Audis were sold in China in November, up 13.7 percent from the previous year. Both of the two VW-affiliated JVs performed strongly. FAW-VW sold a total of 146,700 vehicles in November, while Shanghai VW sold 119,000 vehicles. The two figures represented year-on-year growth of 16.7 percent and 10.2 percent, respectively.

Meanwhile, a total of 161,600 Hyundai and Kia vehicles were sold in November. Sales of GM vehicles were not far behind. The remaining brands’ sales were far behind the top three.
