Global automobile market in 2015

China led the rest of the world, followed by the US, Japan, Germany, South Korea, India, Mexico, Spain, Brazil and Canada

As OICA statistics compiled by Gasgoo.com (Chinese) show, China was the world’s largest automobile market in 2015. In terms of production numbers, China led the rest of the world, followed by the US, Japan, Germany, South Korea, India, Mexico, Spain, Brazil and Canada.

A total of 24.5 million automobiles were sold in China in 2015, approximately double the 12.1 million automobiles produced in the US. However, China’s production volumes have slow downed to 3.3%, compared to 3.8% growth for the American market. Japan remains the third largest producer of automobiles, with a total 9.23 million automobiles, down 5.1% year-on-year.

While there were other countries that managed to make over two million vehicles, they were still far behind the top three. However, some of these countries managed to post high year-on-year sales growth rates, with Spain’s production numbers growing 13.7%. By comparison, Brazil and Canada’s automobile production numbers fell 22.8% and 4.6%, respectively.

China was also the world’s largest market for automobile sales, followed by the US, Japan, Germany, India, the UK, Brazil, France, Canada and South Korea.

A total of 24.59 million automobiles were sold in China in 2015, 4.7% more than the 2.34 million automobiles sold in 2014. By comparison, the next largest automobile market was the US. American sales totaled 17.47 million automobiles, up 5.7% year-on-year. Japanese automobile sales totaled 5.04 million units, down 9.3% from the previous year’s sales figures.

No other national markets on the top ten list were able to accumulate sales of over 4 million automobiles in 2015. However, most of these markets were able to achieve strong year-on-year sales growth rates, with South Korea’s sales increasing 10.3% to 1.83 million automobiles. However, Brazil’s sales fell a full 26.6% from 3.76 million units sold in 2014 to 2.56 million units sold in 2015. Russia, which has seen Its economy crippled lately, has also suffered massive negative sales growth of 44.5% in 2015.
