Top 4 Japanese automakers by May China sales

Gasgoo summarizes four major Japanese automakers’ China sales performance in May as below. Last month, Nissan was still the champion by both monthly sales and YTD sales. Honda has not seen year-on-year growth yet whether in monthly or year-to-date sales. Besides, Mazda faced a year-on-year decline of 2.4% in May, versus the 7.6% year-on-year increase the company had achieved in April.


Nissan

Nissan vehicle sales in China jumped 14.3% in May over the previous year to 128,059 units (including imported vehicles), according to the data the company released.

Among that, the PV sales of Dongfeng Nissan and Dongfeng Venucia in May reached 106,445 units in total, jumping 15.2% year on year. Meanwhile, the sales performance of the CV unit (including Dongfeng Automobile Co., and Zhengzhou-Nissan) showed a year-on-year jump of 14.4% to 18,251 units last month.

Through May, the China sales volume totaled about 589,409 vehicles for Nissan, up 10.8% compared with year-ago period. Its PV sales rose 11.3% year on year with 492,662 units delivered so far this year, while the CV sales reached 81,508 units, increasing 13.5% from a year ago.

Toyota

Toyota Motor's China sales reached 122,400 units in May, up 8.6% from the previous year. Over the first five months, the Japanese automaker delivered a total of 562,200 units in China with a year-on-year increase of 8.7% as well.

The automaker is ambitious to sell 1.4 million vehicles in the world’s largest auto market, nearly 9% more than the sales target the company set for 2017. At the Auto China 2018 in China, Toyota Motor, joining hands with FAW-Toyota and GAC Toyota, showcased a total of 26 models, including the IZOA, the Corolla, the Levin plug-in hybrid version and the C-HR, which is the first SUV model based on TNGA platform.

Honda

Honda delivered a total of 99,263 vehicles in China last month, dropping 15.3% year on year. Both GAC Honda and Dongfeng Honda saw year-on-year decline of 12.9% and 17.7% in May, with 51,141 units and 48,122 units delivered respectively. By the end of May, 2018, the Japanese automaker’s cumulative sales in China have already exceeded 10 million units, according to Honda China.

For the first five months this year, two joint ventures delivered 501,116 vehicles in total, edging down 6.5% from a year ago. GAC Honda saw a slight year-on-year drop of 1.8% in year-to-date sales to 276,328 units. Meanwhile, Dongfeng Honda Jan-to-May deliveries shrank by 11.6% over the previous year to 224,788 units.

Mazda

Mazda delivered a total of 126,530 vehicles in China for the first five months, maintaining an upward sales momentum with a year-on-year jump of 12.6%. It is noteworthy that the cumulative sales of SKYACTIV technology-equipped models have already exceeded 1 million units in China, according to Mazda Motor (China) Co., Ltd.

As to its two major sales channels in China, FAW-Mazda Jan-May deliveries reached 51,261 units, edging up 3% from a year earlier. Changan Mazda boasted an impressive year-on-year sales growth of 20.2% with 75,269 vehicles delivered so far this year.

In terms of monthly sales, Mazda delivered 24,495 vehicles in China last month, slightly dropping 2.4% from a year ago. To be specific, FAW-Mazda sales in May edged down 3% year on year to 9,799 units, and Changan Mazda delivered 14,696 units, down by 1.9% over the previous year.
