Safety of Auto Show school buses questioned

A number of school buses exhibited at this year's Beijing Auto Show do not meet new school bus safety standards which were officially implemented on May 1. Exhibitors have stated that the buses will comply with safety standards according to the national guidelines, Beijing Morning Post reports.

According to the report, the school bus zone has been one of the highlights of this year's Beijing Auto Show, which ran from April 25 to May 2. Visitors were able to board the buses and take a look around. Many parents took their children to look at the Navistar school buses, a United States-based truck-manufacturing company, as opposed to those buses produced locally. Some parents stated that the American buses are sturdier than the locally produced ones.

Most of the school buses exhibited at the Beijing Auto Show were American-style school buses. The majority of buses exhibited were equipped with stop signals, monitoring systems, special seats and other devices designed to ensure the safety of passengers; all of which comply with the national standards.

However, each of the buses failed to meet the national safety standards in varying degrees. Navistar buses fell short in certain areas, including the design of the windows and the design of the emergency exits.

A staff member from Navistar Company said that the school buses imported from the US comply with American standards, and the models on show are only for exhibiting purposes. Navistar Company has signed an agreement with JAC Motors, a comprehensive automaker, and the buses will be adjusted according to the national standards.

A sales manager from Higher Bus Company Limited in Suzhou, east China's Jiangsu province, said that the standards for school buses are still being improved. Those buses which fall short of national standards will be adjusted in order to comply with national guidelines.A number of school buses exhibited at this year's Beijing Auto Show do not meet new school bus safety standards which were officially implemented Tuesday.
