Low carbon development affects tire sector in Shandong

Shangdong government has issued the Low Carbon Development Working Plan 2017-2020.

The province aims to reduce 20.5% carbon dioxide emission per unit of GDP by 2020 from 2015.

The working plan will affect the tire sector.

Focus on tire recycling

According to the working plan, the Economy and Information Committee and the Provincial Development and Reform Commission of Shandong will regulate the order of tire remanufacturing.

Rubber powder and rubber recycling programs are encouraged by the government.

The province aims to reduce carbon emission of chemical industry by about 18% by 2020.

Tire companies encouraged to shift product structure

Tire industry needs to upgrade traditional chemical equipment and use efficient energy-saving technologies and appliances to realize low carbon development.

Shandong province indicates in the working plan to shift product structure and control the size of low-end production capacity.

As a major tire producer, Shandong province aims to propel industrial upgrade through low carbon development and produce “high-performance, green, safe” tires instead of cheap ones.

Accelerating implementation of carbon trading system

Shandong Environmental Protection Bureau says it is accelerating the establishment of carbon emission trading system.

Shandong authorities are to impose quota limits on key enterprises in selected sectors to be involved in the carbon market.

The province is working on establishing provincial carbon emission registration system in the carbon emission quota market.

There have been debates over the “carbon emission trading system” in the tire sector.

One of the debating issues is how to calculate the emission of carbon dioxide.

High-performance tire generates large amount of carbon dioxide during the process of manufacturing, but it will sharply reduce the emission during the process of driving.
