Chinese Intelligent Vehicle Research and Development Center, the first R&D center for intelligent cars, is launched and located in Changshu City of Jiangsu Province in China.
“This R&D center can be regarded as driving school customized for intelligent cars,” said Zheng Nanning, an academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering and chairman of Chinese Association of Automation, on the seventh China Intelligent Car Challenge on November 14.
The circuit of this year is more close to a real traffic scene with robots being used as barricades. Since the traffic condition can not be predicted in real life, each team is required to accurately judge the environment. In attempt to increase the difficulty, there are urban roads, suburban roads, rural roads, and simulated tunnels in this challenge according to Zheng Nanning.
“Though, there is still a long way for the development of intelligent cars in China,” pointed out Zheng Nanning. Regarding the actual state, it is unlikely that automatic driving can replace manned driving. Therefore, automatic driving is not the only way to develop intelligent cars. Intelligent cars ,however, can become a new mode of transportation. Undoubtedly, so long as people still enjoy driving, the development of intelligent cars will help to improve safety of manned driving. Just like hybrid vehicles, intelligent cars can use diesel, gasoline and motor. In the future, there is supposed to be a kind of vehicle which can both be manned and computer-controlled.
Chinese Intelligent Cars Research and Development Center was jointly established by municipal government of Changshu City, Institute of Automation of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Qingdao Academy of Intelligent Industries, Xi’an Jiaotong University and Chang’an University.
In order to achieve intelligence and standardization of intelligent cars test in unique sites, this R&D center improves the existing roads, roadside infrastructure and traffic signal system, constructs actual traffic testing environment, is equipped with car networking facilities and provides high-precision map and intelligent vehicle test service.
